This painting is called Two Students, and I made it in 1996 while I was teaching and still figuring out what I wanted my work to look like. It's acrylic on paper, 8.5 x 11 inches, and was part of a series of figure studies I was doing at the time. It’s now part of my Fresh Finds collection—work I’ve saved for years and am finally releasing.

The scene shows two figures—young people, maybe college age—seated in a dim, moody room with light streaming in from the right. One figure is sitting back in shadow, and the other is leaning forward. I was focused on light and form here, using bold, loose brushstrokes with a limited palette. There's a kind of tension between the two figures—maybe they're mid-conversation, maybe they're waiting for something. That ambiguity was important to me. I think I've always wanted the viewer to decide what is happening.

The anatomy is mostly accurate but simplified. I wasn’t trying to make it photorealistic—this was more about gesture, posture, and how light defines space.

The figure on the right anchors the foreground with a strong vertical posture, and the figure on the left recedes into shadow, which gives the piece depth and contrast. The light from the window pulls your eye diagonally across the space.

As for iconography—it’s not symbolic in a traditional way, but it does speak to themes I often explore: observation, ambiguity, and emotional undercurrents. These aren't portraits of specific people, but they feel familiar, like a memory or a film still. This was during a time when I was playing around with Bay Area Figurative influences, trying to balance figuration with expressionist brushwork and structure.
