This ships from Round Lake Beach, Illinois. A suburb outside of Chicago.
I use UPS and sometimes US Post.
This watercolor is called Hippy, and I painted it in 1996. It’s 8.5 x 11 inches on paper, and it’s part of my Fresh Finds project—work that I’ve held onto from earlier in my career and am finally ready to release.
The figure is a young woman in a hot pink dress and wearing a headband. She’s shown with a slightly tilted head and relaxed posture, set against a muted, loose background that suggests a room or space without spelling it out.
The anatomy and pose are pretty accurate, but the way I blocked in the shadows and planes of the face uses angular, almost geometric shapes. Her hands and arms are simplified and exaggerated just enough to push it slightly away from realism without being abstract. The skin is layered with warm oranges and ochres to give a sense of dimensionality.
The figure leans slightly to one side, with the arms drawing the eye diagonally across the piece. The background is mostly dark, which helps push the figure forward and create contrast.
There’s no obvious symbolism, but for me this piece taps into something I was exploring at the time—quiet, introspective moments and characters that feel like they’re paused mid-thought. I wasn’t trying to make a political or narrative statement, just catching a gesture and a vibe. The title, Hippy, is more about the headband and overall vibe of the figure—it reminded me of something between a fashion pose and a casual snapshot from a past era.
