This print, titled Back Room, is an intaglio and aquatint artwork I made in 1994. It's from a very limited edition, state 2, numbered 1 out of only 4 prints. Measuring 11x14 inches, this piece captures a moody gathering around a table under a single overhead lamp, hinting at quiet tension or intimate conversation.
The style is a blend of realism and abstract elements. I kept some aspects naturalistic, like the believable arrangement of the figures and furniture, which grounds the scene in reality. Yet I've intentionally abstracted facial details and simplified anatomy into angular shapes. You can see geometric stylization clearly on the faces and hands—creating an atmospheric feeling rather than precise portraits. This technique enhances the dramatic mood and emphasizes psychological intensity.
The environment is realistic but stripped down: a hanging lamp casts deep shadows that heighten the sense of drama. The furniture is recognizable but minimal, providing just enough context for the figures' interaction. Shadows and highlights are carefully exaggerated to focus attention on the faces and upper bodies, making the scene more mysterious and cinematic.
Compositionally, the print is asymmetrical. Three figures sit closer together on the left, balanced visually by the single figure on the right. The overhead lamp creates a spotlight effect, guiding your eyes to the focal point—the group at the table. This composition style is reminiscent of film noir cinema and mid-20th-century photography, influencing both the mood and visual narrative.
This piece connects deeply to my broader career interests, including human interaction, subtle storytelling, and the blending of traditional and modern artistic techniques. My work often draws from historical and popular-culture influences, especially film and photography from the mid-20th century. The scene could feel at home in a classic black-and-white film, hinting at underlying narratives just beneath the surface.
