Headlands and multidisciplinary artist Brent Green present Study for Lesser Satellites, an installation that is activated through a series of performances for San Francisco’s Untitled, Art fair. Comprised of three “violin dresses”—hoop-style structures made of wood, cloth, steel, and violin and cello strings—that can be worn and, when rotated, played by bowing the strings, Green’s piece combines the ornate with the raw, and the simple with the ingenious. These multivalent garments keep with themes that have long consumed Green’s work: the power, beauty, and potential for social good that can stem from individual forms of inventiveness and creativity. Intended as sculptural installation, set design, and performance costumes alike, Green’s violin dresses set the stage for multiple forms of inquiry and engagement.
Performances of Strange Fates, a hand-drawn animated film accompanied with live narration and a soundtrack performed by a little orchestra of accordion, clarinet, trumpet, violin, drums, guitar and singing, will take place within the installation each day of the fair at 4PM; an 8PM performance will be held during the VIP preview on Thursday, January 12.
